Romans 12:2 When we feel hopeless it's time to turn to the help of God for an immediate Divine intervention of soul help. There is a strong reason that we named our private spiritual retreat center “Hope Hill.” One of the saddest things that anyone can experience is hopelessness. When people at the end of their rope have tried everything and have failed, they don't know where to go; they feel a great despair. They are ready to give up – to escape anyway they can, but they don't know how to escape anymore. That is the experience of helplessness. That's when it's time to turn to the help of God. As a minister, I have seen that sometimes people must get to the absolute bottom before they turn to God – how sad! And when they do, God is always responsive. God says – "Yes! You may be experiencing a sense of helplessness, but I tell you it's an illusion. You may think you are blinded by your own limitation, but it's an illusion. There is much more inside of you. Let Me work through you." You may have had "experts" tell you that you're going down the tubes. You may have doctors tell you that you're going to get better. But I tell you, there is a healing power that CAN manifest through you. You may have attorneys tell you that you have to declare bankruptcy because there is no other way; you are so insolvent you can't possibly pull out of this one. But there is another way: The Lord will be the hope of God's people and the strength to the children of God! If I had a big rubber ball (picture this in your mind) and I threw it down with all my strength, what would happen to the rubber ball? As it hits bottom one side would be completely flattened. But the miracle is, that even after the ball seems flat and lifeless, it springs back; it has a resiliency. That which was deformed and no longer looked like a rubber ball is restored because it has resiliency. With God that can be our resiliency miracle too. We have a special spiritual resiliency. I don't care how flat our life seems or how deeply in despair we may be or how lifeless some area of our life appears, inside of each of us is a spiritual resiliency that can return us to our original form and renew life. But better than that, with God we have the power to bounce back even better than we were in the beginning because our problem is solved at a higher level of creativity than it was created by us. What is hope? Hope inside of you is looking at a point of light in the night sky and knowing that it is another world. It is watching a wave burst into foam along the sand and knowing the sea is the boundless deep. It is looking at the fields and the whole world and knowing the earth is another star. Hope is standing in the winter snow or the summer drought while seeing the fields green and lush, their crops ready to harvest. Even more, it is making preparation for harvest because hope involves action. Hope always works. The essence of hope is that we live by it. Hope shapes us and shapes our life. Is hope a kind of seeing? Yes, but it's more than seeing with the eyes. Hope holds firm even when our eyes can't see. Hope does not look for signs. Hope may be strongest when the signs are fewest. Hope is a certainty, based not on outward conditions, but on inward convictions. Hope is knowing the sun is shining when the sky is overcast with clouds. Hope is knowing where the trail is when the woods are dark. Hope is a kind of knowing a helmsman has as he pilots his ship through the reefs in a raging storm. The frightened passengers cry, "I pray you know where the rocks are!" Hope says, "I don't know that, but I do know where the deep water is." Hope is Elijah digging ditches when there was not a cloud as large as a man’s hand and in the sky. Hope is Madame Curie following the trail of radium even to death's door. Hope is Job affirming, "Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him." Job 13:15 Hope is Thomas Edison doggedly trying substance after substance until suddenly there was light. Hope is Jesus praying, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always," and even before He uttered the cry, "Lazarus come forth!" John 11:41-43 Hope is anyone who cries out to a world of suffering, "God is love." Hope is the soul as it plummets through the unknown, affirming like a Psalm of praise, "Underneath are the everlasting arms." Deuteronomy 33:27 Hope cried, "If I may but touch His garment," and reached out, knowing His garment never trails outside the reach of prayer. "Peace! Be still!" says Hope when fear awakens it and rebukes the wind and the waves. For Hope knows that at the center of all storms is perfect peace, and you are one with peace. When you think, feel, and want peace only peace can appear. Hope always precedes peace -- in Advent and in your life. With eyes you may look and see limitation. With Hope you follow Jesus Christ and looking past limitation and perceiving the all potential of God. Jesus was born for the purpose of bringing the message of hope to humankind.
