 CORE VALUES

"Thou dost guide me with Thy counsel." Psalms 73:24

A big mistake is made in life when we fill our days with small trivial things only,
placing the important big things, on the back burner of life, to be handled another day – or missed altogether.

There is an old story that I often share in my sermons when I speak
around the country that is about core values.

There was once a professor at a college and he had a big glass jar which
he filled up to the brim with sizable rocks. Then he asked his students,
"Is this glass jar full?"

They said, "Yes, Professor, it is full."

He said, "Students, can I get anything else in this glass jar?"

The students said, "No, that thing is full of rocks."

Then the professor smiled and took some gravel. The gravel went into the
glass jar around the rocks, went to the bottom and slowly filled up. Then
he said, "Students, is the glass jar full now? Can I get anything else in
the glass jar?"

Very soon, one student realizing that though to his eyes it looked full,
he was going to give the professor the right answer and said, "No, I don't
think it is full at all."

The professor said, "You are right." The professor poured in a whole cup
of sand which went around the gravel, down through the rocks and filled up
from the bottom of that glass jar to the top. Then he said to the
students, "Is the glass jar full now?"

The students said, "No, Professor, no way." You learn fast in college.

The professor said, "You are so right." He took a big cup of water and he
poured it in and the sand, gravel, and rocks soaked it up.

But then he said something he hoped the students would never forget.
He said, "Know what your big rocks are in life, what is really important to you,
because so often we fill our jar of life first with the water, the sand, or the
gravel and then we can't get in the things that are really important to
us."

First, in your life you have to examine who you are and what is important
to you.

There was a lady. Above all else, her family was important to her. It was
a huge rock in her jar of her own life. She had a new baby, a wonderful
husband, and a wonderful marriage. This was very important to her, but she
realized that one of her dreams was to work on a cruise ship. At this same
time she got an offer from a cruise line, but it would require her to be
away for four months at a time.

Her husband, a very supportive man, said, "Go, enjoy."

So, she went off and worked for four months away from her husband and her
little girl. About the third month, she was miserable. She had to think,
"Why am I miserable, I have high pay, I have my dream being manifested; I
have everything in my life." Then she realized some of her core values
we’re missing. She realigned her life.

Make sure when you go after your dreams, whatever they are, that your big
rocks are in your life FIRST, otherwise your life will be lacking.

Get close to God and ask for guidance in this important core value area.
